Chapter 9: Terms

"No?" I said.

"No," Christian said again. "You can shout at us, and we'll stay."

"It's my house."

"It is," he said. "That is exactly why we're not leaving it."

I looked at the three of them in the middle of my marble hall, every one of them furious in his own way, and none of them moving an inch.

I climbed the staircase until I stood on the fourth step above their heads.

Dorian laughed softly.

"Is this a speech?" he said.

"Yes," I said. "Listen."

They listened.

"I'm not leaving any of you," I said. "I'm not choosing either. If you can't live with that, there's the door."

Nobody went to the door.

"These are my terms. You don't get to argue."

I held up a finger.

"One. I decide which night is whose. Nobody puts me on a calendar. If I want three nights in a row with the same man, that's what I get."

Christian's mouth twitched.

"Two. Nobody investigates anyone near me without telling me first."

"Lena," Maddox said.

"Nobody, Maddox. Not a coworker, not a driver, not the man who sells me coffee."

"I'd tell you after," he said.

"Before."

He did not answer, and I took it as a yes.

"Three. Nobody pays for anything I didn't ask for. No groceries. No houses. No islands, no equity, no gowns on a rack."

"That one's late," Dorian said.

"It starts now."

Christian's jaw worked, and it took him a moment to say, "Fine."

"Four. None of you fights in front of me. I've watched you be polite for two days, and if I see one of you put a hand on another, all three of you are out."
