Chapter 11: On the Lawn
Preston was out of the car before I had finished turning around.
He came up Tucker's driveway at a dead run, with his jacket open and his tie gone.
"Get away from my wife!"
Tucker stepped out onto his porch and pulled the door shut behind him.
He did not hurry.
"Evening, Preston," he said.
"You son of a bitch. She's been in your house with you, and you've had her at my table, in my neighborhood."
"It's actually my table."
"Tucker," I said.
"Sorry," he said. "That was a joke. I'll stop."
Preston stopped at the bottom of the steps, breathing hard.
Behind him, doors were opening along the street.
The woman with the corgi came out in a bathrobe with the dog on a leash.
The man with the hedge trimmer stood at his mailbox with his arms crossed.
Two teenagers had stopped on the sidewalk, and one of them was already holding up his phone.
I walked past Tucker and down the steps.
Preston looked at me, and what showed in his face was not jealousy.
It was calculation.
"I knew it," he said, loud enough for the street. "I knew you were sleeping with him. All this time you've been playing the victim, and you've had a boyfriend next door."
"I haven't slept with anyone," I said.
"Right."
"I kissed a man in his own kitchen on a Wednesday night. You watched it from your car for ten minutes. Say that part too."
His mouth tightened.
"I'm going to use this," he said. "My lawyer will love this. Adultery, in front of witnesses. You're going to look like a woman who threw out her pregnant sister for her neighbor."
