Chapter 14: Not in My House

Preston rang the doorbell at nine that night, and then he kept his thumb on it.

I stood in the hall with the intercom switched off and listened to the chime go through my grandmother's house.

Biscuit watched from the stairs with her ears flat.

Tucker had gone home an hour ago, and he had the night off.

I had told him I was fine, and I had told him the terms, and he had agreed to every one.

He had also kept my doorbell feed open on his phone, because I had let him.

I pressed the intercom.

"Go home, Preston."

"I don't have one." His voice came through the speaker thin and wet. "Brianna, please. Five minutes."

"You have five seconds."

"I'm begging you."

I opened the front door as far as the chain would let me.

My husband was on his knees on the porch mat, in a wrinkled shirt, with his hands out in front of him.

He had been crying, and for the first time in eight years his hair was not combed.

"Give it back," he said. "Whatever you took out of that pocket. I'll drop the suit and I'll tell your mother it was all me. I'll sign the house over to you tonight, with a pen, here."

"It's already mine."

"Then I'll sign anything you want." He grabbed the edge of the door. "Brianna, I can't have her see it."

"See what?"

His mouth shut.

I watched him decide to lie, and I watched him pick the wrong one.

"Your mother thinks you're sick," he said. "If you show her something out of context, she'll think you're sick and cruel. Is that what you want?"

"I want you off my porch."

"You owe me. I stayed. Eight years I stayed with a wife who couldn't."

I took my hand off the door.
