Chapter 20: What Joan Saw

Nobody in that hall moved for a long time.

Then Preston backed toward the door with his hands out in front of him, and the choir turned their heads together to watch him go.

"Everyone here has been lied to," he said. "Everyone. You can't believe a girl who's been crying for a month."

"Young man," said a woman in the soprano row.

She stood up, and she did not raise her voice.

"My husband manages the warehouse on Mason Street. He signs the flooring orders you've been pushing for months."

Preston stopped.

"I'll be telling him about this over dinner," she said. "And I'll tell him what a man looks like when he does it to his own wife."

"That's a threat."

"It's a casserole recipe," she said. "I'm going to sit down now."

The hall made a sound I had never heard a church make, which was a laugh.

Preston looked at my mother.

"Joan," he said.

She looked back at him, with the lab report folded in her hand.

"Your keys to my spare room are on the counter at home," she said. "I'll leave your bags on my porch by four. If they're still there on Monday, I'll call the police to carry them."

"You can't do this to me."

"I can do exactly this. I have seen what you are."

He turned and went out through the double doors, and nobody followed him.
