Chapter 22: Night Shift

Tucker's POV

The triage nurse told me about the man in bay six before I had finished my coffee.

"Laceration, right hand, punched out a car window. He's drunk, and he's asked for you by name."

"By name?"

"He said, 'Not the neighbor.' So I figured it was you."

I put the cup down and read the chart.

Preston Lyle, thirty-three, with glass in his knuckles and a pulse of a hundred and ten.

I stood outside the curtain for a minute, because I wanted to be sure I was a nurse when I went in.

He was sitting on the gurney in a wrinkled suit, holding his right hand against his chest in a wad of paper towels.

His face was gray, and his eyes were red, and he looked at me without a word.

"I want someone else," he said.

"There isn't anyone else. Two nurses called in sick, and the doctor is with a chest pain. You can wait six hours or you can let me look at it."

He looked at the wall.

"Fine."

I washed my hands and pulled on gloves and unwrapped the towels.

The cuts ran across three knuckles, and a long piece of glass stood out of the back of his hand.

I took it out with forceps, and he hissed.

"Hold still," I said.

I irrigated the wound and picked out the smaller pieces under the lamp, one by one.

Neither of us spoke.

It took a while, and I did it properly, because that is what the job is, and he was a patient.

"Joan put my bags on her porch," he said at last, thickly. "The woman from the choir called her husband at the warehouse. I got a voicemail on the drive over. Don't bother coming in Monday."
