Chapter 21: The Whole Night
The sun went behind Lamphere Hill at twenty past five.
At twenty-five past I turned the key in the back door and put the chain on.
He was standing in my kitchen with his coat still on and a loaf of bread in a towel.
"It doesn't count," he said.
"Put it down."
He put it on the table.
"Coat. Boots. Everything. Upstairs, and I'll be there in two minutes. You'll find what you need on the bed."
He went up the stairs.
I heard the boards over my head, and then nothing.
Then a sound that was half a breath and half a laugh.
I waited the two minutes.
When I came into the bedroom, the lamp was low.
He was lying naked on his back on top of the quilt with his hands at his sides, looking at the headboard.
On the iron bars I had knotted four silk scarves, two at each corner, long and loose.
He had not touched them.
"Hands up," I said.
He raised his arms and laid them along the pillow.
I knelt beside him on the bed and wound the first scarf twice around his left wrist, snug, with a knot at the bone.
I tied the other end to the iron.
I did the same to his right wrist.
I checked each with two fingers under the silk.
"Too tight?"
"No."
"Pull," I said.
He pulled.
The headboard rang, and the knots held, and a little sound escaped him that was not quite a groan.
"Tell me if your fingers go numb."
"I will."
"Tell me anything you want," I said. "Anything. All night."
"Yes."
"All night means all night, Etienne. I'm not letting you up until it's light."
His eyes were bright and wide.
"Okay," he said.
I took off my sweater and my jeans and stood beside the bed in my underwear and the harness.
I had put it on under my clothes at four o'clock that afternoon, at my desk, with a town report open in front of me.
His eyes went to it and stayed.
"Not yet," I said. "First I'm going to take my time."
I kissed him.
I started at his mouth and went slowly down: his jaw, his throat, his collarbone.
I bit the soft place under his ear and he arched against the scarves.
I took his nipple between my lips and sucked it, and he gasped, and I took the other.
