Chapter 23: The Thaw

I woke in the gray with a warm weight on either side of me and a long arm across my ribs.

For a moment I did not know where I was.

Then I heard the water.

It was not the sound it had made all winter, the flat hard slap of a cold bay.

It was looser and softer, with a low steady rumble underneath.

I eased out from under the quilt.

Nobody woke.

Rook lay on his face with one hand flung across the pillow where my head had been.

Ansel slept with his mouth a little open and his glasses folded on his chest.

Magnus lay on his back at the edge of the bed with one arm bent over his eyes, breathing slow and even.

I had never seen him sleep.

He looked younger, and very tired, and the gray in his beard stood out in the window light.

I pulled on Rook's shirt and went to the glass.

The bay had broken.

The ice that had lain along the rocks since January had come away in white and gray plates, and the tide was carrying them out through the harbor mouth.

Between the plates the water lay open and black and shining.

The sun was coming up behind the church on the hill.

It was the last week of March.

I took the chain from the bedpost and went out through the open iron door.

I went down the three flights in bare feet with the stone cold under my soles.
