Chapter 7: Rook
His room was on the floor below mine, at the end of the corridor, and it looked like the inside of a magpie's nest.
Shelves ran from floor to ceiling.
There were brass buttons in jars, old coins in saucers, a ship's compass on a bracket.
A long string of sea glass hung across the window, so the lamplight came in green.
The bed stood against the far wall, wide and low, under a gray wool blanket.
He lit one lamp and set it on the sill.
"Excuse the mess," Rook said.
"It's a hoard."
"It's a very organized hoard," I said.
"Magnus says it's a fire hazard."
I laughed, and he turned and looked at me, and then neither of us was laughing.
I shut the door behind us.
I turned the key in the lock, and the sound of it was nothing like the lock on my own door.
I had chosen this one.
"Sit on the bed," I said.
He sat, and looked up at me with his hands open on his knees.
I had never in my life told a man what to do in a bedroom.
I took off my coat and let it drop.
I pulled off the wool sweater and the shirt under it, and stood in front of him in my bra and trousers with the green light moving on my skin.
I watched his eyes go over me, slow, and I felt every inch of it.
"God," he said, very low.
"Look at you."
"Take your shirt off."
He pulled it over his head.
He was lean and hard under it, salt-pale, with freckles over his shoulders and a long white scar curling around his ribs.
I put my palm flat on his chest.
His heart hammered under my hand.
