Chapter 22: Before Ten

The elevator doors closed on the two of us, and I pressed fourteen instead of twelve.

"Delia," Wade said. "Where are we going?"

"The chairman's floor."

"What for?"

"You said I can't talk to you in the elevator before ten a.m.," I said. "It's nine twenty."

"I did say that."

"Then you'll listen."

He leaned back against the rail with his arms at his sides.

For once he did not look like the man who owned the building.

"Paige is wrong," I said.

"I know what she said," Wade said.

"She's wrong about the one thing you can't stop thinking," I said. "Say it."

He rubbed his eyebrow.

"You came to Cleveland because of Grant. You stayed because of Grant. I know that. He's the reason you're in this tower and in my grandmother's kitchen."

"And in your bed?"

"I don't know," Wade said, very quietly. "That's what I don't know."

I turned to face him.

"I took a transfer because it was the only door open and I had fourteen dollars," I said. "That's Grant. That's all of Grant."

"Delia."

"I stayed because you deleted that email with two clicks."

"That's still Grant," he said.

"I stayed because you cut off your brother's rent the minute I told you to. I stayed because you stood behind me in that driveway and let me say it myself."

I breathed.

"Yesterday I told Grant I wouldn't look back, and I didn't," I said. "I looked at you. He wasn't in the room."

Wade did not move.

"I'm not going to say it again in a nicer voice," I said. "I'm going to do something about it."

The doors opened on fourteen.

The hall was long and carpeted, with a glass wall onto the boardroom and a gray-haired assistant at a desk.
