Chapter 5: Four Sentences
The lobby was full of people leaving for the day, and all of them stopped.
Grant saw me and came across the marble with the roses held out in front of him.
"Dee."
He went down on one knee in the middle of the floor.
From a velvet box he took out a ring larger than the first one.
"I know I messed up," he said, loud enough for the whole lobby to hear. "I know I let you down. But Paige signed the papers. We're divorced. Marry me on Monday, like we planned."
Behind him, Paige kept her phone steady.
She was smiling the soft, worried smile I used to take for kindness.
A woman from claims put her hand over her mouth.
Two interns stopped halfway through the revolving door.
Someone near the elevators whispered, "Is that the guy from the video?"
I stood very still.
Three days ago I would have cried.
I took out my phone instead.
"Grant, I'm going to answer you in four sentences," I said. "Listen carefully, because I only say them once."
"Dee, please."
"One. I'm not marrying you."
"Two. You were married to Paige on the day you proposed to me, and you're still married to her now."
A murmur went around the lobby.
"That's not true," Grant said. "We signed."
"Three," I said, and pressed play on my phone.
My voice came out of the speaker, calm and tinny, and Grant's voice came after it.
*It was. It is. I mean, it's over. Please. I have no rent money, and we both know the savings were for us. Think of it as a loan.*
