Chapter 7: The Black Sand Beach

At six in the morning the black sand beach was the coldest place I had ever stood.

The wind came straight off the sea, and the waves hit the shore in long gray lines.

Out in the water, tall dark rocks stood up in the surf, and a few last stars were still showing behind them.

"You will hate it," Sunna had said.

She was right for the first ten minutes.

I set up the tripod in the lee of a basalt column, and my fingers went stiff on the dials.

"Your hat is not on," Sunna called from the van.

"It's on."

"It is in your pocket."

I pulled it on.

She leaned out the window with a thermos in her hand and an expression of enormous patience.

"If you lose a finger, the producer will take it out of my pay," she said. "Come and drink."

I walked back across the sand with my knees knocking.

She poured something black and hot into the cup of the lid and held it out.

It was coffee so strong my eyes watered.

"Good?" she asked.

"It's terrible."

"Everyone says that on the first day." She watched me drink it anyway. "On the third day they ask for more."

I gave the cup back, and our fingers brushed.

Her hand was warm and rough, and she took hers away first.

"The light will break in six minutes," she said. "The tide is at the bottom. If you wait on the rock where the waves go through, you get the line of foam against the sky. Not too close. The sea here kills tourists."
