Chapter 10: The Hero Wall
Nobody saluted in the Lowmarket after dark, because nobody there could tell a knight in a brown jacket from a carter.
Corisande had changed in the barracks and come down the hill road with her hair still wet.
The night market ran along the river under strings of paper lanterns, and it smelled of smoke and fried dough.
She bought two skewers of grilled river eel from a stall and handed him one without asking.
Ryota bit into it and stopped walking.
The glaze was sweet and salty and a little burnt at the edges.
"What?" she said.
"Nothing. There's a shop near my mother's that does eel like this." He took another bite. "Exactly like this."
"Better or worse?"
"Theirs costs four times as much."
"Then it's worse," Corisande said, and walked on.
He caught up with her, laughing.
She ate fast and neat, and threw the stick into the river when she was done.
"My grandfather kept pigs," she said. "He taught me to fight with a pig stick, in a sty, because my mother wouldn't let me near a sword."
"Did it work?"
"The pigs respected me." She glanced at him sideways. "The Marshal's son was easier than the old boar."
Ryota laughed so hard he had to stop by a fish stall.
She looked pleased with herself, and then she looked away so he wouldn't see it.
"Tell me about your mother," she said.
"She runs a secondhand shop in Osaka. Rice cookers, radios, game machines. She can tell what a thing is worth by picking it up." He hesitated. "She sings when she does the books. Badly."
"What does she sound like?"
He opened his mouth to answer and found there was nothing there.
