Chapter 18: The Lowmarket Hears

Ryota sat down across from the Sword Saint and pushed the sword back to him.

"Has the old man ordered you to stay in the castle tonight?"

Tsubasa blinked. "No."

"Then you're not breaking anything." Ryota poured the dregs of the pot into his own cup. "You came to the right shop."

"I'm serious."

"So am I. You want to know what to do. First thing, ask me to broker for you. Out loud, in front of somebody."

"Why?"

"Because I can only counter for people who ask me." Ryota drank the cold tea. "Only the king can let you off that mountain, so I'll need to counter him for you."

"He'll say no."

"He said no tonight, in a dark room with nobody watching." Ryota put the cup down. "Most people say no to a price when nobody's watching."

Tsubasa looked at the sword for a long moment.

Then the kitchen door creaked, and Gautier stood in it in his nightshirt with a candle.

"Well, there's a witness," Ryota said.

Tsubasa stood up and bowed, properly, from the waist, the way Ryota hadn't seen anyone bow since the train.
