The carriage ride home was silent for exactly one street.
Then Yuwei took a pot of ink from the little rack, pulled the prince's sleeve toward her and began to write on the white cuff.
"What are you doing?"
"Sums."
"On my sleeve?"
"It was the nearest paper." She did not look up.
"Your stipend is two thousand taels."
"There are a hundred and forty servants."
"Feeding them costs fourteen hundred, if the rice is bought at the market and not at the Wan Fu Granary."
"And the other costs?"
"I'm getting to them."
"You are enjoying this."
"A little."
He leaned back against the cushions and watched her.
The lamplight wavered across her bent head.
He looked, she noticed, as though someone had handed him a cup of warm wine after a long march.
She added a column.
"The Empress will order Maple Ford returned. A sale made by a Dowager with no right is void. That's eighteen hundred a year in rent."
"If she remembers."
"She remembers everything."
