Chapter 8: Five Weeks
"Five weeks," I said.
The word came out flat.
"You've known for five weeks."
"Yes."
"And you stood there at the block party and let me say all that. In front of the whole street. In front of your mother's friends."
"Yes."
"You let me humiliate you."
"You didn't humiliate me, Laurel. You hurt yourself in front of the street, and I watched."
I sat up against the pillow so fast the IV pulled.
"Don't you dare make this about my feelings. You lied to me. You let me think I was doing this alone."
"You were doing it alone because you told me to leave."
"Then you should have left."
"I did leave. I left in front of everyone. I walked down the middle of the road." His jaw worked. "And then I went and sat in a parking lot."
I stared at him.
"The blue truck," I said.
"Every infusion day. I sat in the back row until your dad's car pulled out." He gave a short, humorless laugh. "I figured if you wanted me, you'd have to look. You looked at me exactly once, and then you turned your head."
"Fraser."
"I was at the foot of your trellis the night you were sick in the bowl. I was there at the fertility clinic with an envelope."
It hit me.
"The cash," I said. "It was you."
"Yes."
"It was eleven thousand dollars. Where does a furniture maker get eleven thousand dollars in cash in two days?"
He didn't answer.
Something in the way he didn't answer made my stomach turn over.
"Fraser."
"I sold my dad's lathe."
"No."
"A man in Overland Park came with a trailer. He paid twelve thousand. He was thrilled."
"That was your father's lathe!"
My voice broke on the word.
Hank McCracken had bought that lathe the year Fraser was born.
He had taught Fraser to turn his first bowl on it.
Fraser had pushed it out of the garage with his own two hands after the funeral and never let anyone else touch it.
