Chapter 5: The Pier
On Monday at noon I was standing on the ferry pier with a paper bag of Bea's smoked fish, and Marco Ferraro walked down the boards in a camel overcoat.
A man in a gray suit followed him with a briefcase.
Marco was smiling.
He had always smiled.
"Betsy," he said, opening his arms. "There you are. You look wonderful."
I did not step into the hug.
He lowered his arms without any embarrassment at all.
"This is our attorney," he said. "He has the final paperwork. It's very simple."
The lawyer opened his case.
On top lay a folder with little yellow flag tabs along its edge.
Under it lay a cashier's check.
Five million dollars again, with my name spelled out in full.
I had left the first one under the salt shaker for two days.
Then Bea had mailed it back with a note that said: no thank you.
Here it was again.
Men from the fish house had stopped hauling crates to watch.
A woman at the ticket window leaned out with her coffee.
Bea's friends. All of them.
"I don't want it," I said.
"Betsy." Marco kept his voice low and kind. "It's more money than you'll see in your life. Don wants you looked after."
"Then Don can tell me that."
"He's in meetings."
"I'm sure he is."
I took the check out of the folder.
"What's the silence clause for?" I asked.
The lawyer paused.
"I'm sorry?"
"The agreement says I never speak about what happened at the house that night. What am I supposed to have seen?"
