Chapter 8: Valeria's Name

Don's hands lay flat on the diner table.

"Valeria," he said.

I waited for the rest.

"She said you came to her. Months ago. You were unhappy and you couldn't tell me, so you told her." His voice was low and steady, the voice he used on contractors. "She called me from Milan every week. She said you were crying on the phone. She said you didn't know how to leave."

I stared at him.

"Valeria said that."

"She said you asked her to help you go without a scene."

"I have never called Valeria Ferraro in my life."

"Betsy."

"Check my phone."

I slid it across the table.

I had taken it out of Bea's drawer that morning, after two days off.

His thumb found the call log.

He scrolled, and scrolled again.

"Three years," I said. "Look at the names. Bea. The florist. Bea. A dentist. Bea."

He kept scrolling.

"I met her twice before the gala," I said. "Once at our wedding, for four minutes. Once at your mother's birthday, when she said my dress was brave. That's all."

He looked up.

"She was in Milan," I said. "For two years."

Don's thumb stopped.

He read something on the screen, and the color left his face a little at a time.

"She told me you called her on Sundays," he said.

"What did I sound like?"

"I never heard. She said you were crying too hard for her to put me on."

"That's convenient."
