Chapter 21: Too Late

The whole arena heard him.

Across the water.

The benches went quiet, row by row, the way the dining hall had the morning he came with his first writ.

I felt Cassius go hot as an oven against my side.

"Don't," I said under my breath. "Not with claws. Not today."

He breathed out smoke and stayed where he was.

The Headmistress was coming down the steps from her box with her cane in one hand and a rolled parchment in the other, tied with the royal blue ribbon.

My father stepped into her path.

"Not until my writ is answered," he said.

"Then let's answer it," I said.

I looked up at the front row.

The Guild master was sitting there with his spectacles on their chain and the brown leather ledger under his arm.

He'd come straight from his hall to watch the final, and he hadn't let go of it once.

"Sir," I said. "Would you read the last page out loud? Slowly. For everyone."

My father turned.

He saw the ledger.

"That's a forgery," he said. "We settled this at eight o'clock this morning."

"We didn't settle anything," the Guild master said. "I opened an inquiry. This is the inquiry."

He stood up, climbed over the low wall onto the sand, and opened the ledger.

His voice was dry and old and it carried to the top row.

"Every page names the eastern buyer," he said. "The last one is dated for the equinox."
