Chapter 21: The Photos

Giancarlo was out of bed before the video finished.

He stood at the window in the dark with his phone already at his ear.

"Find where she's sleeping," he said into it. "Tonight."

"Giancarlo."

"I'm not going to touch her. I'm going to take her phone."

"Hang up."

He looked at me.

"Hang up," I said. "Please."

He hung up.

I sat on the edge of the bed with the seating chart still in my lap. Table nine was half crossed out.

My hands were cold. They weren't shaking.

That surprised me.

"She's had those pictures for five years," I said. "She's been holding them over me the whole time. Even when I didn't know she had them, she had them."

"So we take them."

"You can't take them. They're on a cloud somewhere. Her lawyer probably has a copy. If you take her phone, she posts from another one, and then it's the mob wife who tried to bury the pictures."

He sat down next to me.

"Then what?"

"Then I go first."

On Thursday night I sat in the break room of my ER in my scrubs, with my new badge clipped to the pocket.

My charge nurse held the phone.

Behind her, the coffee machine hissed. Somebody's lunch was going around in the microwave.

"You sure?" she said.

"No. Press it."

She pressed it.

I looked into the lens.

"My name is Dr. Carly Marchese," I said. "Tomorrow at noon, Whitney Lyle says she's going to post pictures of me. I want to tell you what's in them before she does."
