Chapter 18: Silk and Edges
By Friday I owned a table.
It was a secondhand pine table from the church sale, with two chairs and a lamp.
The man from the hardware store had carried them up my stairs for free.
Cass came at seven with the stool on his shoulder and a sack of groceries, and he cooked his half.
It was salmon on a sheet pan with lemon and onions, and it was good.
We ate it at the table with the radiator knocking.
He washed the dishes without being told.
Then he dried his hands, and turned to face me, and went down on one knee on my kitchen floor.
"Not that," I said.
"I'm not proposing."
"I know. Stand up."
"I'm asking in the right position."
"The right position is standing."
He stood.
He put his hands behind his back.
"Ebba Sundquist," he said. "Will you come to the Founders' Supper tomorrow as my guest, at the head table, on your terms?"
"Yes."
"Just yes?"
"Yes, I'll sit at your right. Yes, I'll wear green. Yes, you may stand up first."
His shoulders came down an inch.
"Thank you," he said.
"Don't thank me."
"Why not?"
"Because I'm not keeping that count anymore."
He frowned.
"What count?"
"Come to bed, Cass."
I took his hand and led him through the doorway.
The iron bed stood under the window with its mattress made up in plain white sheets.
The streetlight lay on the headboard, which was a row of black iron bars, close together, worn smooth by decades of other people's hands.
I had thought about those bars all week.
I let go of his hand and took the teal scarf off the chair, where I had left it.
It was the long silk one, from the credit union, folded in a neat strip.
