Chapter 18: Regan
I let her in because the canvas was in her arms.
I would have let in a bear, if it had been holding that.
Regan stood dripping on the boards with the brown paper hanging off her wrists.
She was wearing the same gray raincoat she'd had at the lunch table, and under it, a nightgown.
Hattie sat up on the couch with her hair standing off her head and found the mallet by feel.
"Should I hit her?" she asked the room.
"Not yet," I said.
I took the Harbor out of Regan's hands.
It was heavier than I remembered.
It was mine, every inch of it, the gray lying wrong in the lower left where I'd never been satisfied.
"You slit eight of my canvases," I said.
"Nine," Regan said.
"One was behind the door."
I almost laughed at her.
It came up in my chest, and I swallowed it.
"Why this one?" I said.
"Why is this one whole?"
She wrapped her arms around her middle.
"Mother said to leave it."
"She said, 'We need it alive, to put your name on.'"
"A man came in a van that same night and set up in the guest house, and he copied it by morning from a photograph Zachary took in your studio."
