Chapter 28: Paper

Kit didn't move.

"No," she said.

Constance blinked.

"Not alone," Kit said. "Anything you want to say to me, you can say in front of my sister. You never said anything to her in private that was any good."

Sawyer's grandmother shifted her purse to her other arm.

Constance looked at the three of us on the steps.

For a moment I thought she'd get in the car.

She didn't. She climbed the steps, slowly, one hand on the cold rail.

She looked older than she had in October. Smaller, in the wind.

She stopped two steps below Kit, so that for once she had to look up.

"I was in the back of the courtroom," she said. "Behind a pillar. I heard what you said."

"Okay."

"I've sat on the boards of three hospitals. I've given away more money than most people will ever see. I have never once thought about the donor's family." She pressed her gloved hands together. "Not once. Not in forty years."

Kit waited.

"I knew there'd been a call," Constance said. "The morning after. I knew it was Kenzie's number. I told the hospital it was a clerical matter. I told my son there'd been confusion." Her mouth worked. "And then I drove to your bedside with a contract."
