Chapter 30: Solo Again

Kit didn't sleep on Sunday night. I know because I didn't either.

I heard her moving around her room at two, and at four, and at five.

At six I came down and found her at the kitchen table in her flight jacket.

Her laptop was closed in front of her, with both hands flat on top of it.

"It's not there yet," she said. "I checked a dozen times."

"It's six."

"I know what time it is."

I made eggs. She didn't eat them.

At seven-thirty Sawyer's truck came up Tern Lane.

He knocked on the back door and came in with snow on his boots and a box from the hangar kitchen.

"Grandma sent muffins," he said. "And a message. She says if you open that email alone she'll never speak to you again."

Kit looked up.

"She said that?"

"She said it louder."

So we went to the hangar kitchen.

Kit carried the laptop against her chest.

The kitchen was full. It was always full at a quarter to eight, but this morning it was fuller.

The mechanic. The co-op bookkeeper. Three lobstermen who should have been on the water.

The old man in the wool cap and his grandson.

The harbormaster's daughter-in-law, with the baby asleep in a sling.
