Chapter 31: The Hangar
I pulled open the small door in the side of the hangar.
It was dark inside. Just the gray light from the high windows, and the smell of fuel and old leather and coffee.
The Hen and the Chick sat nose to nose in the middle of the floor.
Between them, somebody had dragged his grandfather's bench in from beside the fuel pump.
It was the old wooden bench with the peeling green paint.
I'd sat on it every summer until I was eighteen, learning to fly from a man with a crossword.
Somebody had strung the work lights across the rafters.
Sawyer was sitting on the bench.
He stood up when I came in. He looked like he hadn't slept either.
"Hi," he said.
"You missed the third landing."
"I saw it. I saw it from the window." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I had to come in early and plug in the lights. The mechanic said you'd come looking."
"The mechanic's in on this?"
"Everybody's in on this."
Behind me, the small door creaked.
I turned. Sawyer's grandmother came in first, then the mechanic, then Kit, still in her headset, breathless.
They lined up along the Hen's wing without a word.
"Sorry," Kit whispered. "Carry on."
Sawyer took a breath.
"I had a speech," he said.
