Chapter 14: The Charge

The Moot opened at dawn, in the same hall where I had delivered a baby eight hours before.

Someone had scrubbed the head table, and five elders now sat behind it in a row.

The oldest of them, the man in the blanket, rapped a staff on the floor.

Two hundred wolves filled the benches, and the ones who could not find seats stood along the walls.

Braden sat at the end of the elders' table in his good coat, with Jolene on a chair at his shoulder.

She had not looked at me once.

Alexander stood by the double doors, where he had stood on the night of the anniversary, under guest-right and quiet.

When I caught his eye he nodded, once.

My younger daughter sat on the front bench between Eliza and Dora, with her phone in her lap and her chin up.

"Alpha Hartwell has a charge to put to the Moot," the old man said. "Speak it."

Braden rose.

"Catriona Hartwell stole the founder's ring from this pack," he said. "She wore it for twenty years as Luna, and when I released her from the bond, she walked out of this hall wearing it."

A murmur went along the benches.

"The ring belongs to the seat," Braden said. "It does not belong to a woman who has no seat."

"May I answer?" I said.

"The accused may answer," said the old man.

I stood and walked to the middle of the floor.

Then I took the ring off my right hand and held it up so the back rows could see.
