Chapter 16: Earn It
The loan collector in the gray jacket was waiting at the foot of Ye-won's stairs.
It was two days later, and she hadn't answered Tae-oh's calls.
She hadn't answered Jang's either.
"Ms. Rho," the man said. He had a clipboard and a polite, tired face. "The fund has called the loan."
"What?"
"The full amount. Sixty-two million won. It's due in seven days."
"It isn't due for three years."
"There's an acceleration clause."
He tapped the clipboard.
"Your creditor sold the note to a fund with a close relationship to the entertainment industry. They have a lawyer. They'd prefer to be paid."
He gave her a sheet of paper and went away down the stairs.
Ye-won read it standing in the dark.
It had Hanbit's law firm in the letterhead.
She climbed to her rooftop room and sat down on the bed.
For the first time in two years she could not make herself do the math.
At nine that night there was a knock on her door.
She knew the knock.
She opened it.
Tae-oh stood on the roof, in the rain.
He had no cap and no coat, and the water was running down his face.
