Chapter 21: The Gala
The launch gala for Salt Season was held at a cinema in Gangnam, with a red carpet three hundred feet long.
The first trailer would play on the big screens over the entrance.
Ye-won wore the red silk wrap, the same one.
It had cost her the first third of her fee, and she thought it should earn its keep.
Tae-oh wore a black suit with no tie.
He held her hand all the way from the car to the first photographers, and he didn't let go.
The flashes came.
Reporters shouted his name, then hers, then hers again.
At the end of the carpet, under three enormous screens that glowed with the film's poster, Ma Gyeong-su was waiting.
He wore a pale tie and held a paper cup of tea.
"My two stars," he said warmly. "Such a night."
"Such a night," Ye-won said.
"I'm told the Seorin matter has been settled."
"Has it?"
"Entirely."
He smiled at her.
He had no idea.
Across the street, Jang stood by the projection booth with his hand raised.
The technician he knew nodded.
Above Ma's head, on the big screens, the poster blinked once and went black.
The red carpet fell quiet in a slow, rippling wave.
Then a sound came out of the speakers.
It was wool scraping on a microphone.
It was a man's ragged breath, loud and close.
And it was Ye-won's own voice, small and clear and calm, filling the whole Gangnam street.
