Chapter 10: The End of the Pier

The driver parked at the far end of the pier lot, where the asphalt ran out against a rail.

The bay lay flat and silver under the afternoon sun.

He turned off the engine, took his phone, and got out without looking back.

I heard his shoes on the gravel, going away.

Then there was only the tick of the cooling car and Levan breathing beside me.

"He's gone for a walk," I said.

"I heard."

"He'll walk a long time," I said. "I tipped him in advance."

"You did what?"

"Eighty dollars. Out of your jacket." I held up the folded bills. "I took it while we were driving."

Levan stared at me, and then he put his head back against the seat and laughed, helplessly, with his hand over his eyes.

I climbed into his lap while he was still laughing.

I pushed my skirt up around my hips and straddled his thighs, with my knees pressed into the leather on either side of him.

I put both my hands on his face.

"You stood in my father's restaurant today with your hand on my back," I said. "You let my brother say all of that, and you never raised your voice."

"I didn't want to give him the satisfaction."

"I know. I liked it."

"You turned his wrist," Levan said, and the laughter went out of his face. "I should have moved first."

"Stop it."

"I didn't see him."

"Then stop counting everything you didn't see," I said, and kissed him.

His mouth opened under mine, hungry, and his hands found my hips and dragged me down against him.

I felt how hard he already was through his trousers, thick and hot against the seam of my underwear.

I ground on it slowly, once, and we both groaned.
