Chapter 11: The Mirror

The dress was emerald velvet, with long sleeves and a high waist.

It was cut for a woman who was going to get bigger.

Marigo had had it made.

I knew because the tailor's pins were still in the hem.

"She measured you in your sleep," Alex said.

"She measured me at the table."

"Same thing."

It was four o'clock on Christmas Eve, and the light in his room was going gold and gray.

Down in the kitchen the cousins were making melomakarona, and the whole house smelled of honey and orange peel.

I stood at the tall cheval mirror in the corner with the dress over my arm.

I was in my slip, looking at a woman I did not know.

She had a flush in her cheeks.

She had a new fullness at her hips and breasts and a soft round curve below the navel.

Her hair was loose to her waist.

She did not look like a pledge.

She looked like somebody's wife.

Alex stood behind me with his chin near my shoulder and watched me look.

"Put it on," he said.

I stepped into the dress, and he drew the zipper up my back.

His knuckles brushed my spine from the bottom to the top, and I closed my eyes.

The velvet fit perfectly.

It skimmed the curve of my stomach and left room for it, and it made my skin look gold.
