Ari's POV
I had my palm flat on the inside of the pledge room door, at the height of his.
I knew he was there.
The old boards on the landing complain when a man stands on them, and he had stood there a long time.
I did not open it.
The candle under the icon burned red on the nightstand, and the brass bed was made up again with hospital corners.
That was Marigo's work.
She had made the bed again at midnight, without a word, while I stood in the doorway with my green dress over my arm.
"I know you're awake," Alex said, through the wood.
His voice was rough, and I knew he had not slept.
"The candle's lit," I said.
"Open the door, Ari."
"No."
I heard him breathe out against the grain.
Then I heard a soft knock, the flat of a hand, exactly where mine was.
I did not move my palm.
I could feel the wood faintly warm, and I told myself it was the radiator.
