Chapter 23: The Keys
Ari's POV
On Easter Day there were twenty-two of us at Marigo's long table, and the lamb came off the spit at noon.
The cousins carried it in on a board, glistening and brown, and the aunt cried out as she did every year.
A bowl of red eggs sat in front of each place.
Alex took one and held it up between his thumb and finger.
"Christos anesti," he said, and struck the point of his egg against the point of mine.
His cracked.
Mine did not.
"I win," I said.
"You always win," said the cousin on my right, and the whole end of the table laughed.
Under the cloth, Alex's hand settled on my knee and slid up to the curve of my belly.
I let it stay.
He drew small slow circles there with his thumb, and the baby rolled to meet him.
I had to look at my plate.
Marigo sat at the head in black with her back straight and her hands folded.
She had not touched her food.
When the plates were half empty, she rose.
