Chapter 30: The Tea
"I don't know," I said. "You never told me there was a gun."
He looked at me in the dark for a long time.
Then he turned his face back to the ceiling, and he didn't say another word all night.
At six I found Galina in the kitchen, rolling dough with her sleeves pushed up.
"He remembered something," I said. "The first night. A gun, outside my door."
The rolling pin stopped.
She didn't ask me how I knew.
She looked at my bare feet and his sweater and my hair, and she knew how.
"Sit," she said.
I sat.
"First night, I don't sleep," she said. "I hear him in the hall. I come to look."
She wiped her hands on her apron very slowly.
"He stands at your door with the pistol by his leg. Long time. Very long."
"I don't breathe. I think, Galina, tonight you bury a girl."
My hands went cold on the marble.
"Then?"
"Then he puts the pistol in his belt and goes to my kitchen. He makes tea with ginger, because the doctor said."
Her mouth twisted.
"Too much ginger. He carries it back to your door and knocks."
