Chapter 16: Flour and Bread
Marren went to count what was left in the storehouse, and she took the young hunter with her.
She left Thad with a cave short on grain, a tally that said the Spring Den owed the Hold for the winter, and one idea.
"Bread," he told the cubs at breakfast.
Tuck raised his head from the bowl. "What's bread?"
"Grain meal, water and time, baked until it's brown. You tear it. It's the best thing there is."
"Better than honey cakes?" Tuck asked.
"Different," said Thad. "You'll see."
It had started four days ago with a stone bowl of honey water and grain meal.
He had left it beside the warm spring and forgotten it.
When he lifted the cloth, the bowl was foaming.
It smelled sour and alive.
Thad laughed out loud.
He sifted the meal through a reed basket until it ran fine.
He kneaded it on the flat stone with the starter, a spoon of fat and a pinch of cave salt.
The cave was too cold for the dough to rise, so he hung it in a sling of hides by the spring.
Then he went to find Wystan.
"I need an oven," Thad said.
Wystan was splitting wood at the cave mouth, bare armed.
He set the axe down.
"Describe it," Wystan said.
"A clay dome, about so big, with a hole in the front and one at the top."
Thad held his hands apart.
"I build the fire inside, rake it out, and bake against the heat."
Wystan studied the air where Thad's hands had been.
Then he went down to the creek bank with a basket, and by noon he had hauled up enough clay to build a wall.
