Chapter 7: Croissants and Nothing Slow

Tobias knocked at eight exactly, and he had shaved.

He stood in my doorway with a paper bag from the corner bakery, in a clean gray shirt.

He looked as nervous as I felt.

"I didn't know what to bring," he said. "So there are croissants."

"It's eight at night."

"I know."

I laughed, and I stopped being nervous.

I took the bag and pulled him in by the sleeve and shut the door.

Then we both just stood in my tiny kitchen, looking at each other.

"I've never done this," I said. "You know that."

"I know."

"I'm not scared of you."

"You don't have to be," he said softly. "I've wanted you since that bridge."

"I don't want slow."

His breath caught.

"I want you to stop being careful with me, Tobias. I want you to kiss me like you did on the bridge."

He put the bag down on the counter.

He crossed the kitchen in two steps and kissed me against the refrigerator, one hand braced beside my head and the other at my waist.

It was hungry from the first second.

I opened my mouth to him and heard him groan.

His tongue slid against mine, hot and slow and certain, and my whole body went loose.

He pulled my shirt over my head.

His hands were shaking when they found my bra, and he unhooked it clumsily on the second try.

"Sorry," he said against my shoulder.

"Don't be."

He looked down at me.

Nobody had ever looked at my breasts, and I wanted to cover them, and I did not.

"God, you're beautiful," he said, and he bent and took one nipple in his mouth.

A sound broke out of me that I had never made.

My head hit the fridge.

His tongue circled, and he sucked, and the heat that had been building for two years drove straight down between my legs.

I fisted his hair.

"Bed," I managed.

He picked me up, and I wrapped my legs around him.

We kissed our way down the hall to the room I had slept in since I was twenty-two.
