Chapter 16: What He Signed

Mathis's POV

I had practiced the sentence all night, and it still came out wrong.

"Before dawn I took two papers to the elders' hall," I said. "One gives up Blackmoor's claim on the Ardrey dead. The other gives up Blackmoor's right to hold the Eastern Border."

The packs stirred.

Sabine stood in the middle of the ring with her back to me.

"The Council kept my wife's parents as a lever for three years," I said. "Now they're in the ground, and the lever is gone. The second paper takes the other one. If she says no at the end of her ninety days, no one can threaten her with a war."

"Your wife," Hester Quill said. "You have no wife yet."

"I have a bride who was never asked."

I heard it echo off the benches.

"The Council now holds the border," Hester said, to the whole ring. "As is right."

She smiled at me.

I had expected that, and I had done it anyway.

Sabine turned.

Her face was perfectly calm, and her eyes were furious.

She did not speak to me in front of them.

She walked out of the ring through the packs with her unit at her back, and she did not look to see if I followed.

I did.

The black car waited at the curb.
