Chapter 15: The Pawn Shop
The officer came back upstairs with gloves and a paper bag.
He lifted the lid with two fingers, looked at the bands, and photographed the box where it sat.
"Don't touch it again," he told Kendra. "Don't touch anything in this closet."
"She put it there," Kendra said.
"Then your fingerprints won't be on it, and hers will."
Kendra shut her mouth.
She went downstairs without her suitcase, and the silver car pulled out of the drive a minute later.
My father stood in the closet door for a long time.
He was looking at the rack of pearls.
"Twenty-two thousand," he said. "I paid forty."
"I know."
"What do we do with the rest?"
"We find who handed it to her," I said. "Dad, a fifteen-year-old can't pawn a necklace. Someone drove her."
He looked at me.
"There's a pawn shop on Detroit Avenue," he said slowly. "The ticket came from there. The lawyer read me the file."
"Did you read it?"
"No."
"Then we're going."
