"I had it cleaned," Brielle said. "The place on Pike Street that does wedding dresses."

"They asked me whose it was."

Brodie went up the outside stairs without a word and shut his door softly behind him.

I came up the porch steps and took the garment bag from her.

It was lighter than I'd thought.

"What did you tell them?"

"My sister's mom's." She shoved her hands in her hoodie pocket. "First time I ever said that out loud. Sister."

We stood there under the porch light.

Neither of us sat down.

"I'm not going to hug you," she said.

"I wasn't going to hug you."

"Good."

A moth banged against the bulb over our heads.

"When we were six," Brielle said, "you had a pink bike with streamers, and he ran behind it holding the seat."

"I watched from the cottage window. I used to pretend it was me on it."

"It was his driver who held the seat," I said. "Not him."

She stared at me.

Then she laughed, short and wet.

"God. Even that."

"Even that."

"I wanted to be you so bad I made it true for a year."

"I wanted a sister so bad I hid under a piano with one," I said. "And then he sent you to school in town."
