Chapter 23: The Count Room
The woman from Margate leaned over my shoulder and read the note.
She didn't scream.
She took off her sunglasses, folded them, and put them in her jacket pocket.
"There are two keys," she said. "There are always two keys to a box like this."
"And he kept the other one."
"He keeps the other one of everything."
"He emptied it after I sold the watch," she said. "Somebody told him I came to your shop."
She laughed, short and dry, and handed me the note to keep.
Then she stopped with her hand on the door.
"Do you want to know the thing he always said? Every Christmas, with a drink in his hand?"
"Yes."
"The safest place for money is the room where everybody's counting something else."
She put her sunglasses back on and walked out of the vault.
Ciro was still standing by his pillar in the lobby.
"Empty," he said.
"Empty, and he left me a love letter."
I gave him the note.
He read it, folded it once, and put it in his inside pocket next to Bean's scan.
Lexie was behind our counter at Second Carat in a lilac smock, eating saltines out of the sleeve.
