Chapter 26: Not Like This

Two hundred people held their breath.

Ciro stayed on one knee with the box open.

He didn't argue. He didn't stand. He just waited.

"Get up," I said, quieter. "Please. Come with me."

I took his hand with the ring box still in it and walked him off the dance floor.

Nobody moved out of our way. We went around them.

I didn't stop until we were in the long hallway by the penthouse elevator.

The carpet was the same. The brass lamps were the same.

Somewhere up in the ceiling was the camera that had filmed two laughing women at ten past two in March.

I let go of his hand.

"Say it," he said. "Whatever it is. I can take it."

"I'm not saying no."

His shoulders eased.

"Then what?"

"You just took your uncle's ring," I said. "The whole room was cheering. Then you got down on one knee."

"I know. I planned it badly."

"You planned it like a man who just won."

He looked at the box in his hand.

"My mother used to want that," I said. "A rich man to pick her in front of a room. Like a prize at the end of a carnival game."
