Chapter 22: The Women

Siobhan's POV

The women began arriving the morning after Christmas, and they kept coming for three days.

They came up the long drive in taxis and church vans and their daughters' cars, in good wool coats, with their handbags held close.

The cook stood at the kitchen door with a tray of coffee.

The driver opened every car door himself.

Cas met them in the front hall, in a plain dark sweater, with his hands at his sides.

"Please come in," he said to each of them. "The study is open. You may read your own page."

Most of them could not speak.

A few came in white with fury, and said so, and he stood and heard it to the end.

One woman of sixty slapped him across the face in the hall, hard enough to turn his head.

He did not lift a hand.

"Thank you," Cas said when she had finished, and held the door for her.

I took them to the study, one at a time.

I opened the green book on the desk to the right page and stepped back.

I left them alone with it and kept the door open.

Each woman stayed as long as she needed.

Some stood for minutes with a hand over their mouths.
