On New Year's Eve the Kostka house sat down to dinner at one table, and the doors were all propped open for the cooking.
It was the last night of my first month.
The agency recruiter had told me, in a dry little voice, that no one had ever lasted past it.
I watched the guests from the kitchen door.
Cas sat at the head in a plain dark sweater.
Leo sat at his right, with a bottle of wine he was already pouring.
My mother sat beside Leo in her navy dress, with her glasses on their cord and a napkin in her lap.
I had asked her three times whether she wanted to come.
Each time she had said no, and on the morning of the thirty-first she had said, what time?
At the far end of the table, in black wool and pearls, sat Halina.
Nobody had asked her to come, and nobody had asked her to stay away.
She ate nothing, and she said nothing.
She sat very straight, with her cane across her knees, and looked at the candle in front of her.
"The pierogi are the cook's," Leo announced. "The wine is mine. The sparkling water is Cas's, because he doesn't trust the wine."
"I trust the wine," Cas said. "I don't trust you with it."
"Mrs. Calloran, do you see how it is? I'm the soul of generosity, and he gets the credit for caution."
"You pour like a landlord," my mother said, tasting her wine.
