Chapter 15: Godfrey's Old Guard
Godfrey's old guard came for me on the third night after the grave.
I was at the kitchen table with Hazel, going through the pack's school-lunch invoices because the pack still needed feeding.
Headlights swept the window, and then there were four of them in the yard.
I knew the one in front.
He was the oldest elder, a heavy man who had sat at Godfrey's left hand for thirty years and never once looked at me.
Three younger wolves stood behind him in the dark with their arms loose.
"Luna," he said from the porch, and I opened the door a hand's width.
"I'm not your Luna tonight."
"You are until the dark moon." He held up a folded sheet. "I have a decree from the Alpha Emeritus and four members of the Elders' Circle."
"Godfrey has no title in Stonebrook," I said. "Ronan stripped it on the hall steps in front of everyone."
"An Alpha can't strip another Alpha's seat in the Circle without a vote."
He unfolded the paper and read it under the porch light, in the flat voice of a man reading a will.
"The Severing is void, because the bond was made for a debt that the Council has not ruled on. The Luna will return to the big house, under the Circle's guard, until the tribunal."
"I won't be going," I said.
"It wasn't a question."
Hazel came up behind me with her sleeves pushed back.
"You're on my land," she said.
"Hazel, stay out of this."
"I delivered half your grandchildren."
"Then you know I don't want to hurt her."
He came up the porch steps.
The three younger wolves came after him.
I shut the door and put my back against it.
