Chapter 4: The Luna's Suite
My fever went down to a hundred by noon, and by one o'clock I was standing in the front hall of the big house with Hazel and two women from the laundry house.
The big house sits exactly four miles from the lake.
My wolf felt the edge of the leash the whole drive and didn't whine once.
"You don't have to do this today," Hazel said.
"If I wait until tomorrow, her slippers are under my bed."
The pack was already gathered.
Word had gone around Stonebrook from porch to porch.
About thirty of them stood on the gravel, and nobody pretended not to look.
I climbed the stairs to the Luna's suite and opened the door.
Mirelle's trunks stood open on my rug.
Her lotions were lined up on my dresser, and a blue cardigan hung over my chair.
Mirelle herself sat on my bed with a cup of tea, propped on three of my pillows.
"Ivy," she said, and her eyes filled. "Godfrey said it was all right. He said you'd want me close to the nursery wing."
"There's no nursery wing."
"He meant the room next door."
"I know what he meant."
I turned to the two women from the laundry house.
"Please take her trunks downstairs and set them on the lawn."
"Ivy!"
"The cardigan too."
They looked at Hazel, and Hazel nodded, and they began to carry.
Mirelle stood up with her hand on her stomach.
"You can't do this to a pregnant woman. Ronan will never allow it."
"Ronan signed it this morning," I said. "Clause five."
I took the prescription pad from my coat pocket and held it up.
By the time the trunks were on the gravel, the pack was whispering in a ring around them.
