Chapter 13: No Water
Sawyer stopped ten feet from the shields, where the gravel turned from gray to black in the dark.
Forty helmets looked at him and none of them moved.
"Which of you has the order in writing?" he said.
The man at the center of the line wore commander's tape on his shoulder.
"Step aside, convict."
"I'm asking what the order says about men sitting on dirt."
"It says clear the yard."
"They're not standing in your way," Sawyer said. "They're not standing at all."
Behind him the rows of orange sat with their hands on their knees.
Not one of them had picked up so much as a stone.
The commander keyed his radio, and the warden's voice came back flat and small.
"Clear the yard, Commander. Use whatever force it takes."
"Whatever force on what?" Sawyer said. "Your cameras are dead, Commander, and your helmets are recording nothing."
"Shut your mouth."
"Every man in that line is deniable tonight. That's why he cut the lights."
Somebody in the shield wall shifted his weight.
Gravel crunched behind Sawyer, one footstep, then two hundred and eighty at once.
