Chapter 14: The Round

Nobody spoke over the runner's body.

Sawyer closed the man's eyes with two fingers and lifted him in his arms.

The yard parted for him, row by row, until he stood in the middle of the dirt with the dead weight against his chest.

"He drank because we were thirsty," the yard boss said, very softly. "That's the only reason."

"I know."

"Then give me a name for what happens next."

The big man's hands had closed into fists the size of cinder blocks.

Behind him a hundred men had the same look, and it was not hunger anymore.

A bullhorn squealed at the gate.

Boone Hargis leaned on the rail of the gatehouse catwalk with an assault rifle slung across his chest.

"Good morning, C-block." His voice rang off the walls. "I'm sorry about your friend. He was warned about the water."

A growl rolled through the rows.

"But I want you to know who you're following into this."

Sawyer felt it coming and did not move.

"That man holding the corpse is not Cole Maitland. He is Sawyer Harlan, the late founder's son, and he owns the walls you're sitting inside."

The sound stopped.

"He walked in with a clean record and a trust fund to play convict for a few weeks. A hobby."
