Chapter 17: Live

On Sunday at seven, Jessamine turned the little TV above the pastry case up to full volume.

The bakery was shut, the glass in the door was new, and the three of us sat on flour sacks in front of the screen.

Roscoe had brought a bag of donuts nobody touched.

Sybil sat in an armchair on the Channel Six set, in dove gray, with her cream gloves on and her hands folded in her lap.

She looked kind.

"Thank you for having me," she said to the host. "I have not slept since Monday, as you can imagine."

"Mrs. Kingsland, your son has made a very serious statement about you."

"My son is ill."

She said it so gently that I almost believed her.

"He lost his father in the spring. He has been taken in by a young woman who suffered a severe head injury, who cannot tell you what year it is, who has spent three weeks living in his home and telling him a story." Her eyes were wet. "Lydia is not herself. She hasn't been herself since the accident. I forgive her. I will always forgive her."

"Forgive her for what?" the host asked.

"For what she is doing to my boy."

Jessamine stood up so fast the sack went over.

"I'm going to put my fist through that screen," she said.

"Don't. It's a good TV." I was already pulling on my coat.

Roscoe looked up. "Where are you going?"

"Where's the station?"

"Across the park," Jessamine said. "Six blocks. Lyd, it's live."

"Then I'm in time."

We ran.

The park was dark and wet, and Jessamine's apron strings flapped behind her.
