Chapter 6: Mark the Time

I closed my hand over the key before he reached the booth.

The kitchen door swung shut behind Roscoe, and he was gone.

Stefan looked at the empty seat, the twenty on the table and the untouched pie.

"Get in the car," he said.

"Don't give me orders."

"Then please get in the car."

I got in the car.

His driver took one look at us and raised the glass partition without being asked.

The street slid past in the grey light.

"Who was that?" he said.

"A man I paid forty thousand dollars to find something."

"What something?"

"You tell me," I said. "Roscoe says you've always known."

Stefan's jaw tightened.

"Roscoe is right."

I'd expected a denial, and the honesty knocked the air out of me.

"Then answer my question. Rule one."

"I'll answer anything else."

"What's in the box?"

"Everything that matters," he said. "I won't answer."

"That's not an answer, that's a wall."

"It's the only one I'm allowed under your rules."

"You were allowed to say the truth, and you picked the wall."

"Because the truth isn't mine to give you today."

I turned in the seat to face him.

"Whose is it?"

"Yours." His hands were flat on his knees. "If I tell you, you'll leave. Not my apartment. Me. The city, probably. I'd rather you found out because you chose to, and not because I put it in your lap."

"That's convenient."

"No. It's the opposite of convenient."
