Chapter 15: Wolf to Wolf

The law cleared the floor of the Moon Hall in the time it took to say it.

The Beta read it out from the rite book.

The wolves drew back to the benches and left a bare ring of stone in the middle.

"Wolf to wolf," he said. "No weapon, no help, and no death unless the loser asks for it."

Elias pulled off his charcoal coat and dropped it.

He did not look at me.

"You don't have to," Rafe said very low behind me. "I can say the word, and Hollow law will take her out of the hall."

"I know."

"Hazel."

"If you stop this, they'll say I needed you to."

His jaw set, and he stepped back.

I walked into the ring and let my wolf come up.

She came up easily, and she was not afraid.

My clothes tore away in strips, and the stone went hard under four paws.

I was silver, and I was smaller than I'd thought I would be.

Elias shifted across from me.

He was the biggest wolf I had ever seen on the Marrick side, black-gray and broad through the shoulders.

He did not wait.

He hit me square in the chest and drove me backward across the floor, and the breath went out of me.

His teeth closed on my shoulder, and the pain was bright and clean.

I twisted free and left fur in his mouth.

He came again, and I went under him and raked his flank.

He roared and whipped round, and I saw the whole front row flinch.

He was faster than I was, and stronger, and he had fought for twelve years.

I had been a wolf for three weeks.

He knocked me flat, and his weight came down on my ribs.

His jaws opened over my face.
