Chapter 14: Mother
My mother came off the 6:10 train in her scrubs, with her winter coat open and a thermos in each hand.
She stood on the dorm steps and looked at me for a long time.
Then she put both thermos down on the concrete and held my face.
"You look thin," she said.
"I look the same."
"You look like a girl who stood on a stool."
I laughed, and then I was crying into her coat, which smelled like hand sanitizer and the night shift.
Bea watched from the doorway with her arms crossed and her chin wobbling.
"Don't mind me," Bea said. "I'm moving boxes."
At nine, a black car pulled up at the curb.
Benedict got out in a plain sweater, with the sleeves pushed up, and I saw my mother see him.
She went very still.
"That's him," she said.
"That's him."
"He's tall."
"Mom."
"I'm only saying it's a lot of man to come up a dorm staircase."
Benedict reached us and stopped one step below her, which put them eye to eye.
"Mrs. Trowbridge. I'm Benedict Amesbury."
