Chapter 16: Drink It, Aunt

Elspeth's POV

I walked down the middle of the hall with a laundry bag on my shoulder and a blind man on my arm.

Eileen came behind me, white to the lips, and she did not stop walking.

The hunters froze with their hands out.

Bastian stood in the aisle with blood dripping off his fingers, and he stared at me.

"I told you to stay with Eileen," he said under his breath.

"You told me nothing. You left a note."

I took his bleeding hand in mine and held it up for the whole hall to see.

"This is your king," I said. "Alive, and bleeding, and standing in front of you."

Gerard laughed.

It was light and warm and sounded entirely sincere.

"The murderess walks in on her own feet. How convenient. Hunters, take her."

"Touch me," I said, "and I open this bag."

They stopped again.

"Lord Gerard," said the Archivist, in a voice as dry as paper. "I have kept the records of this Court for four hundred years. Shall I tell them who asked to read the old bonds, fourteen months ago?"

The hall went very quiet.

The old man turned his milky eyes on the dais, and for the first time, I saw Honoria's face change.

It was only for a second.

Her mouth went small.

"The Archivist is senile," she said gently. "He has been alone down there too long."

"Lady Honoria signed out the ledgers on the old bonds," the Archivist said. "She read for three nights. I have her signature."

"Everyone has my signature," Honoria said.

"Then you will not mind this one," I said.

I pulled the stack of cream paper out of the bag and held up the top sheet.

My name ran down it forty times in a looping hand.
